Cindi Shaffer grew up in San Antonio, Texas.  As a child she learned to work with textiles under the tutelage of her mother, a trained seamstress, and her aunt, who owned a fabric store.  A business career followed that did not include much time for art.

After moving to Prescott in 2000, Cindi began taking art classes at Yavapai College, all the while traveling yearly to take fused and cast glass classes to further her education in kiln-formed glass techniques.  She loves learning and continues to take Master Classes in glass art from many well-known instructors.  Cindi is now joined in her studio by her apprentice, Alison Heavirland, who is becoming quite a glass artist in her own right.

Kiln-formed glass is a fascinating, technical medium, an amazing transmitter of light, a “pieced” way of working that not surprisingly, for Cindi, harkens back to textile memories from childhood.   Manipulating the properties of art glass to make work filled with beauty, depth and flowing color is a never-ending journey of joy for Cindi and Alison at Astral Glass Studio.

“Earth, Clouds, Wood, and Fiber” Digital Painting Creations by Debra Sutherland Core

May 15 – July 14

4th Friday Art Walk reception with Debra Sutherland Core May 26 5:00 – 7:00 PM

“Earth, Clouds, Wood & Fiber”

The ever evolving digital painting creations will be a part of my 2023 show at ‘Tis Gallery. The most recent additions will be the hand painted fiber wall hangings and home decor. Using embellishments of metal, leather, twine, bamboo and wood on cottons and linen fabrics. Earth tone pigments are a favorite for creating tribal, geometric and abstract designs. Stop by and see what artist Debra Sutherland Core has been up to this last year!

Inspiration

What do you draw upon when you create…

All design stems from the origin of all things

Every creative being has inspired me, but the most inspiring is creation itself

Pure and simple form, from nothingness to expansive and complex..

I feel and see colors and patterns not seen by the naked eye

Gratitude to the Divine… I am grateful for each of you following my creative journey…

“Journeys in Spirit 2023” May 19 – June 20

Journeys in Spirit Traditional and Contemporary Native Art 2023

produced in partnership with the Museum of Indigenous People

with additional support by the City of Prescott and the Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council

May 19 – June 20, 2023

Meet the artists during Prescott’s 4th Friday Art Walk  May 26th 5:00 – 7:00 PM

paintings by Filmer Kewanyama (Hopi)
pottery by Delaine Tootsie (Hopi)

Art has always played a powerful and integral role in traditional Native culture. Paintings and carvings of early ancestors can be found on the rocks and walls of sacred spaces and places, inside caves, canyon walls, ceremonial lodges, and mountainsides. Embellished relics from every day and ceremonial use have been found scattered in and around long abandoned community sites.

Today, many of the traditions continue to be handed down from generation to generation. Children are introduced to the arts at a young age. They are taught that color and imagery carry symbolic meaning and that through the arts stories can be told.

The mediums and style vary from tribe to tribe. Basketry, bead working, ceramics, silversmithing, weaving and woodcarving are traditional crafts, and they are often integrated into the making of weaponry, musical instruments, and ceremonial attire and props.

The Native artists of “Journeys in Spirit” come from varied backgrounds and cultures. Many of them live within and outside of their tribal communities. Some of them work in a traditional style while others work in the modern mediums of painting and photography. As varied as their art is, they share a common ground. They are Native artists, and there are stories to be told.

You are invited to come inside the 360 virtual tour of the 2021 exhibition and take your time touring the exhibit in its entirety  Look for the icons where you will be treated to closeup images and informational audio / video segments.

Then just as you might do in person, feel free to exit the ‘Tis  building through the front door where  you will be transported into the heart of downtown Prescott’s courthouse plaza 🙂
